What is Smutgrass?
Smutgrass is a tufted warm-season perennial grass that often invades irrigated pastures and turf areas particularly those with heavy grazing, foot traffic, or poor drainage. Sometime a black fungus called “smut” infects the flower clusters and upper leaves, hence the name smutgrass.
How do you identify Smutgrass?
Smutgrass can be identified as an upright, tough, perennial grassy weed. Its collar is divided into two parts by the mid-vein, and its sheath is smooth and round. It also has flat blades that taper to a sharp point. This lawn weed can best be identified by its seed head, which forms a long, narrow, spike-like panicle.
Does velpar kill Bahia grass?
In south-central Florida, broadcast spraying with 2qt/A (1.0 lb a.i./A) Velpar®, plus 0.1% v/v silicone surfactant to actively growing plants between July and early September resulted in 90% control of giant smutgrass in bahiagrass pasture. Velpar® is a highly effective herbicide, but it is also quite expensive.
Can cows eat Smutgrass?
Young and tender smutgrass has plenty of nutritional value, but when it grows to maturity the grass forms a seed head with no nutritional value. For the experiment to succeed, the cows would have to eat really fast. The cattle in what Stam calls Pasture X seem to be thriving.

What kills all vegetation permanently?
To kill all vegetation in walkways, driveways and other areas where you don’t want any living thing to grow again, mix two cups ordinary table salt with one gallon of white vinegar. Do this in a container that is larger than one-gallon capacity so you have room for the salt.
How do I get rid of grass without digging?
Cut the grass to a short length and then cover the area with plastic or glass. Black plastic works best but you can also use clear plastic. Hold the plastic down with rocks, soil staples, boards or whatever you have handy. It can take a few weeks to a month to kill the roots completely.
