How do you fix a tight cam bearing?
Take an old core and cut diagonal slots in the journals with a hacksaw. Then insert it and spin it. This will slightly oversize the bearings. Clean it up and put the new cam in and try again.
What does bad cam bearing sound like?
Usually hard knocking comes from the low end, bad bearings caused by low/no oil pressure. Sometimes an exhaust leak can sound like a “knock”, which will amplify at certain rpms, and be almost non-existent at others (harmonics).
Can you hone cam bearings?
Honing the ID’s of cam bearings to increase clearance is not recommended because hone grit may become embedded in bearing surfaces which will cause shaft wear. Bearing ID’s may be reamed, but the most practical means is to adjust camshaft journal diameters by grinding.
How hard is it to replace cam bearings?
Replacing the cam bearings is not incredibly difficult as long as you follow the rules and pay attention. If you plan on building only one engine ever, then having the machine shop do the work versus buying the tool may be worth it. In order to remove and install cam bearings, you must have an install tool.
Can you replace cam bearings without pulling engine?
Not possible, or desirable. The engine needs to be completely disassembled and the proper tools used. After cleaning and expansion plug installation, cam bearing installation is the next step when rebuilding the engine.
Can a spun cam bearing Be Fixed?
If an engine has suffered a spun rod or main bearing, and the engine is rebuildable, it will require resurfacing the crank journal, possibly re-machining the main bore or big end rod bore (or replacing the rod) depending on the damage that has occurred.
What causes bad cam bearing?
Lack of Lubrication Not enough lubrication allows for increased friction, which increases heat. The camshaft can then damage the bearing surface as it rotates, which, after further use, may eventually lead to a broken cam cap.
